I just read the post in which the Yarn Harlot (author Stephanie Pearl-McPhee) announced the latest tally for Knitters Without Borders (all funds are for Medecins sans Frontiers/Doctors Without Borders; we just email her and say "I donated X amount" and she updates the tally).

KWB is currently especially concerned with Haiti, obviously, but it's an ongoing tally that dates back to the tsunami in Indonesia.

The tally has just reached this astonishing figure:

$1,000,110

That's right. Over a million dollars because of one woman's knitting blog.

Rock on, Stephanie. Rock on, knitters. Rock on, world.

This is but one of the bazillion reasons I admire [info]tashabear. In the face of almost unendurable loss, this is what she posted today:

"So many of you have said how his art inspired you, and how you were touched by his humor and kindness and generosity. Here's what I want you to do:

If you see someone having a bad day, ask them what's troubling them. Give them a chance to vent. Sometimes that's all they want.

Pay random compliments.

Share. Share your time, share a joke, share a hug, share a drink.

Appreciate the beauty of the world. Everyone has a story, and they want to tell it.

Help people. Even getting something off the top shelf in the grocery store can make someone's day. Think of what helping with the clean-up after a party can do.

Play.

Be kind. Be loving. Be awesome to one another.

Don't forget him. Tell stories about him. Tell the people you love how you feel. I never missed a chance to tell him that I loved him -- don't ever miss a chance in your own lives.

Thanks, y'all. Go forth and do good things."

Will do, Tasha.

Pass it on.

Our hearts go out to [info]tashabear - one of the bravest women I know. She lost her husband Wolfie this morning after a sudden and hard-fought battle. If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting her in my LJ or in the knitting community, she's been a staunch, warm, funny, and generous friend since 2004 - through the preparations for their wedding to her service overseas to their joyous reunion when she finally came home.

Spare a moment to honor the passing of a tremendous heart, and send a wish of kindness to ease her sorrow.

Only In Spirit comes close, really, and it's not far enough along yet for that to be obvious.
